Getting the pass will make your exploring the US, even the Southwest cities you're mentioning of, by train a bit easier,and cheaper too. 9 days! and ill be staying in hostels all the way. Id LOVE to go to some national parks but have no idea how I would do this without a car? I know Big Bend is on the way and id love to go to Monument Valley (although this really is off the train route!), id love to go to Sante Fe too, Salt Lake City. Then from LA get the Amtrak trains (texas eagle!) all the way across to New Orleans with different stops along the way. I think id have to fly from San Fransisco to Vegas, and fly from Vegas to LA, and that maybe I could do a coach trip to the Grand Canyon from Vegas.
